family was one of the first to stay at the very
first Ronald McDonald House in England. Without the
support it gave it is hard to imagine how the family
could have coped.
The house was small and served a
number of childrens' wards which were grouped into
what was Evelina Childrens' Hospital but nobody ever
called it by that name.
There were more families needing
accommodation in Ronald McDonald House than could be
accommodated so here was a waiting list.
The accommodation within Guys
Hospital simply was not large enough so the
childrens' wards were moved into St Thomas's
Hospital into a new Evelina Department. That
original McDonald House was no longer near to the
wards. With the dual problem of the house no longer
being anywhere near the hospital and being far too
small a new Ronald McDonald house was urgently
new house was opened by HRH The Duchess of Cambridge
on 5th December 2016. It provides within its purpose
built accommodation there are 59 rooms.
The house is just a five minute
walk from St Thomas's Hospital. It is
expected the house will accommodate just under one
thousand families a year.
Within the very early days of
OurRebekah we sent more than £700 to Ronald
McDonald's Evelina House.
We will continue to designate
projects to support, if not the house that served
Rebekah's family, its daughter house.
