If you look at any page within
our website you will see this picture, not once but
Look at the cards and messages on
the wall behind her bed. If the camera could pull
back you would see there are so many they stretch
right up to the hospital ward's ceiling.
Those cards were sent to Rebekah
at the time of her kidney transplant. All were sent
from students at a school in California. The
previous year Beck had been to The Golden State and
met many of those who sent her the cards.
Those lovely cards and messages
meant so much.
beck's family was one of the
first to stay in the very first Ronald McDonald
House in Britain. There are now 15 up and down the
country with 366 world-wide.
When we were setting up
OurRebekah to support Ronald McDonald House
Charities UK we decided to have a fun run. Lots of
people have fun runs, we decided to have ours in a
fun city, the legendary City By The Bay - San
Golden Gate Bridge Fun Run is being organised to
support Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham,
England. Support does not only mean money. There are
many other ways to show love.
We can not go to San Francisco
without showing love to Ronald McDonald House San
Francisco. Actually The City By The Bay has not one
but two Ronald McDonald Houses.
McDonald House Scott Street San Francisco is seen
here on the left and Ronald McDonald House Mission
Bay San Francisco can be seen below.
Scott Street House,
opened in 1989, is a ten-bedroom house in the
Pacific Heights neighbourhood of San Francisco,
across the street from UCSF Medical Centre at Mount
Zion where families can catch a free shuttle for a
20 minute ride to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital
at Mission Bay.
The Mission Bay House, located inside the new UCSF
Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay, was
designed to offer brief respite for parents who will
return quickly to their child’s bedside to hold
their child’s hand during a blood draw, be there
when she wakes up from surgery, or peek in to check
on her in the middle of the night. It serves
families in the first stages of crisis.
The Mission Bay
Sleeping rooms that can accommodate up to 11
families a night.
A lounge that can be
converted to an emergency sleeping room for a
family arriving late at night.
A kitchen/dining room where
volunteers and staff prepare three meals a day,
creating community and ensuring that
families receive the nourishment they need to
remain strong for their child.
Washer-dryers visible from
the kitchen/dining room through a window so
parents can keep an eye on their laundry while
enjoying a meal.
A meeting and activity room
for arts and craft projects, workshops, overflow
seating for meals, game and film nights,
birthday parties, and more.
When we are in San Francisco in April 2018 we will
be taking some small gifts of love to families in
the two houses, gifts of love from here in Britain.
As we were setting up OurRebekah we met people who
knew of Ronald McDonald Houses is different parts of
the world. This vast international organisation
reaches far and wide.
We will immediately include the two San Francisco
houses in our Sign a Card programme, we will send
little messages of love to families just as those
from California did for Rebekah all those years ago.
Will you sign a card ? Cards will be available at
all OurRebekah events as well as at any time you or
your family would like to sign one.
Each time we go to a Sheffioeld Wednesday game we
will buy some match-day programmes to give to
families in the houses.
Who knows, one day we may be able to teach America
that the word is football and not soccer !
OurRebekah is all about having fun, doing some
amazing, crazy and often silly things. It is all
about smiling and helping others to smile. As we do
this we will support Ronald McDonald House
Charities as it
puts a loving arm around families with sick children in hospital,
people who are going through some very hard times.
Spend a few moments with
us here, check out our different events then come
and have lots and lots of fun with us.
